Data Versions

  • 1. Dyadic Target-Supporter Dataset
    The unit of analysis is a dyad-year of target country and supporter country. Each dyad is listed as long as there is an armed group fighting against the target in the dyad. Variables are aggregated in accordance with the total number of rebel groups supported by a target state in a given year. For example; NumNAG stands for “total number of NAGs that the given supporter state provided any kind of support in the given year against the given target state”; Num_S_SafeMem stands for “total number of NAGs the given supporter provided safe havens (for group members) with in the given year against the target state.

  • 2. Monadic (Target by NAGs)
    The unit of analysis is the target-year. Each target is listed as long as there are armed groups fighting against itself. The support variables refer to total number of groups fighting against a given target state in the given year. Num_S_SafeMem refers to the total number of armed groups with external safe havens fighting against the target state in a given year.

  • 3. Monadic (Target by Supporter)
    The unit of analysis is a target-year. Each target country is listed as long as there are armed groups fighting against itself. The variables are aggregated by number of supporters. For example, NumSup refers to the total number of supporters providing any armed group fighting against a given target with any kind of support in a given year. Num_S_SafeMem refers to the total number of supporters that provide any armed group with safe havens (for militants) in a given year.

  • 4. Monadic (Supporter)
    The unit of analysis is a supporter-year. NumNAG refers to total number of armed groups supported by the given state in the given year regardless of target states. Num_S_SafeMem refers to total number of armed groups a given supporter provides safe havens (for members) with in a given year.

    The unit of analysis is a NAG-year. Each observation aggregates support type by armed groups. NumSup refers to the total number of states providing a given armed group with any kind of support in a given year. Num_S_SafeMem refers to the total number of states providing a given armed group with safe havens (for members) in a given year.
